The other was about Haley Barbour, the governor of Mississippi who just pardoned like 200 prisoners as he was leaving office. Two thirds of the prisoners he pardoned were white, even though the prison population in Mississippi is two thirds black. And another study found that the odds would be ONE TRILLION TO ONE that that would be coincidental.

And what is the Republican solution to these outrageous inequalities? There isn’t one. And that’s the point. Denying racism is the new racism. To not acknowledge those statistics, to think of that as a ‘black problem’ and not an American problem. To believe, as a majority of FOX (News) viewers do, that reverse-racism is a bigger problem than racism, that’s racist.

This is really funny because I’m editing a story with the exact opposite concept. Thinly veiled Europe is full of brown people, and the savage people eating beasts are all white. Admittedly, though, neither side is particular benevolent…

ETA: oop, forgot to add (h/t to zuky’s commentary), obviously this is most applicable and reflective of white western narratives and media, though this shit is still difficult to escape in productions by POC.

I wrote a story in high school where the people living near the equator were the most technologically advanced. My teacher told me it was wrong & spent a good 30 minutes trying to convince me that ingenuity could only happen in cold climates. We both knew what she was really trying to say, but she had the sense to not come out and say it. This is what happens when you’re taught that the world as you know it came from the “civilizing” influence of imperialism.

Ursula K. Leguin, author of the Earthsea books, among others, has talked about this quite about, and how obnoxiously inequitable it is. She also has made it a point to make her stories primarily about brown people, even if they have fictional “races”. Which is part of why she’s so badass.

What the ever living fuck?

I’m not surprised to see that they are white conservative Christians who were abusing adopted black children. Is this outcome a risk in every transracial adoption? No. But internalized racism doesn’t go away just because people are Christian or call themselves saving a child of color via adoption.

This isn’t an uncommon story whatsoever, this is just one that got more attention. Julia Scheeres wrote about her experiences with her ultra conservative family and her two adopted black brothers, growing up in rural indiana in the 70’s and 80’s.

When i was growing up in an ultra-conservative church, there were NO people of color that weren’t my dad, and he downplayed that as much as possible. They didn’t even bother trying to talk to most adults of color, but went after children of color attempting to capitalize on their perceived vulnerability due to the “inherent instability of their homelife”. Yeah. That’s lovely.

Couples who adopted children of color were held to a ridiculous level of scrutiny because 1) they were perceived as having made some great sacrifice for the lord (BROWN children, can you even imagine?!) but also because they had a responsibility to make sure those children turned out as godly as possible, and if they didn’t obviously that was the adoptive parents fault if they didn’t outwardly look like they were doing everything they could to beat jesus in to them.

seriously. fuck conservative religion.
