Crochet is performed with a single hook, used to pull loops through each other that essentially tie knots. It’s can be very freeform and doesn’t require that much structure to complete a piece of fabric in comparison to knitting.
Knitting uses two needles to pull loops through each other in a very structured manner, row after row (it’s what makes those little “v”s in sweaters and scarves and stuff). Knitting has a pretty rigid foundation, but there’s lots of interesting structural things you can do with it from the basic foundation.
Another interesting fact is that, while knitting is perfectly suited to a machine’s work (it’s very binary), crochet can only be done by hand. So anything you buy that’s crocheted is handmade, and if it’s only 5$ at target, that most likely represents some sweatshop labor.
